Giants to release linebacker Bobby Okereke

The New York Giants have informed veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke they are releasing him to free up salary cap space ahead of the new league year.

The move saves the team $9 million against the cap, allowing the new coaching staff to overhaul the position. Okereke, 30, led the Giants with 78 tackles and two interceptions last season before being selected as a team captain.

The decision comes as the team prepares for new head coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, with linebacker being a key priority following a 28th-ranked defense.
