Wayne Rooney doubts Arne Slot’s suitability for Liverpool, citing lack of ‘aura’

Questions around Arne Slot’s long-term future at Liverpool have followed him through most of the season.

During a stretch that included nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions back in late 2025, there were calls for Slot to be replaced.

Liverpool then went on an unbeaten run, though it included several draws against sides they’d have been expected to beat.

But with Xabi Alonso still being linked and Liverpool only just ending a run of one win in seven Premier League matches, speculation around the Dutchman remains.

Carragher spoke about the situation on a recent episode of the Overlap Fan Debate, where he was joined by Wayne Rooney.

During the discussion, Carragher asked Rooney for his take on Slot. The former England striker didn’t hold back, suggesting that the 47-year-old lacks the presence needed to manage Liverpool.

Rooney also agreed with Carragher’s view that without Champions League qualification, Slot’s time at Anfield could be cut short.

“It’s strange for me. I’ve met him a few times, seems a nice fella but I just don’t think for Liverpool he’s got that aura about him and maybe this is because you’ve just come off the back of Jurgen Klopp and it’s going to be a bit difficult for anyone to have that,” he explained.

“But I just don’t think there’s that aura about him and I’ve worked with Dutch managers and I know they can be difficult at times.”

How Liverpool are projected to finish this season

It hasn’t been finalised yet, but the Premier League is expected to be given five Champions League spots for the 2026/27 campaign.

Liverpool are currently sixth in the table, sitting three points behind Manchester United in fourth, with a four-goal difference separating them.

They’re only two points behind Chelsea heading into the latest round of fixtures. So with a good run of form, they could still push back into the Champions League positions.

Despite being below both Chelsea and Manchester United at the moment, Opta’s supercomputer predicts Liverpool will finish fourth by the end of the season.

They’ve been given a 34.99% chance of securing qualification for Europe’s top competition next term.
