Barcelona switch focus to Premier League defender after Bastoni setback – report

Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has taken a fresh turn.

After accepting that Alessandro Bastoni may be financially and strategically difficult to secure, the Catalan club have started exploring alternative options in the market.

In that regard, according to SPORT, a certain Micky van de Ven is now gaining serious traction.

The Dutch defender has been monitored for months, but recent developments at Tottenham Hotspur could accelerate Barcelona’s interest.

Spurs’ inconsistent Premier League campaign has created instability, and Van de Ven’s situation appears far from settled.

Unsettled at Barcelona

Reports suggest the defender has faced heavy criticism from sections of the Tottenham fanbase this season.

With the club going through a difficult period even sportingly, there is a growing belief that changes are coming this summer.

Van de Ven, aware of the uncertainty, is said to be open to leaving the Premier League altogether and from Barcelona’s perspective, this is where opportunity appears.

The club’s sporting department appreciates his profile. He is left-footed, comfortable progressing the ball, and still young enough to grow into a long-term solution.

Internally, there are strong personal and professional reports on him.

There is also a belief that Tottenham may accept a fee slightly below full market value if they decide to rebuild.

Meanwhile, interest from Liverpool has been noted, but Barcelona feel they would have priority should they move decisively.

Does not come with guarantees

That said, the deal is not without risk. Coaches at Barcelona have raised questions about Van de Ven’s defensive action in certain defensive transitions.

It is said that in some matches this season, he has struggled when isolated in space.

Given the financial commitment required, the club want to be fully convinced he can adapt to their high defensive line and positional demands.

For now, Bastoni remains the dream, but reality is pushing Barcelona to act smartly.
