Barcelona and Real Madrid interested in 22-year-old Premier League midfielder – report

The summer transfer window is drawing closer and rumours are intensifying. It is no surprise that top clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are appearing in reports linked to various players.

The Blaugrana, for their part, are already laying out a roadmap for their transfer activities, with a new centre-forward and a centre-back being their priorities.

However, reports in England claim that the reigning La Liga champions could be going after a new central midfielder.

Adam Wharton on Barcelona, Real Madrid’s radar

Indeed, according to speculation in English media, as relayed by SPORT, both Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in signing Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton.

Both the Spanish heavyweights admire the 22-year-old midfielder’s playing style and quality and are, therefore, weighing up the possibility of making a move for him in the summer transfer window.

From a Barcelona perspective, the move appears unlikely given the number of high-level midfielders already in the squad and the likely transfer fee involved.

After all, the Catalan giants are blessed with an abundance of quality in midfield, where Hansi Flick has Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casado as options.

Moreover, the likes of Dani Olmo and Eric Garcia have also filled in as options in the middle of the park whenever needed.

As for Real Madrid, they are in the market for reinforcements in midfield, despite having a number of options as those in the squad have failed to fill the void left by the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid, the report claims that Premier League teams like Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City are also interested in the midfielder, which could further increase his price.

As things stand, Barcelona are unlikely to pursue an expensive midfielder’s signing and linking Wharton with them could be a part of a strategy used by his agents to drive up his price.
