After 36 holes at the Golfweek Pirate’s Cup, the field is still chasing John Wright of Fairhope, Alabama. Wright opened with 70 at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Florida, and on Monday, came back with a 1-over 72.
Playing in the final group on Monday, Wright opened his day with a bogey on the par-4 first. He birdied the par-5 seventh to get it back to even par at the turn. He had two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine in a steady day that left him at even par for the tournament and with a two-shot lead entering the final round.
Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, North Carolina, is Wright’s closest pursuer after rounds of 73-71 at TPC Tampa Bay. His card was much more colorful on Monday than the even-par total might suggest. Earnhardt, a veteran of several USGA championships, made five birdies and five bogeys.
Joe Alfieri, a Lutz, Florida, local, is solo third. The reigning Florida Senior Amateur champion has put up rounds of 74-72 so far and remains in striking distance of the lead.
Conditions have been windy and difficult at TPC Tampa Bay. Wright was the only player to post a score under par in the opening round, and only two players managed to do it in the second round. Greg Sanders of Anthem, Arizona, who backed up his opening 81 with a 70 on Monday, was one of them, and he moved into a tie for 12th.
In the younger Mid-Master division for players aged 40-54, there still hasn’t been a round in the red. Haymes Snedeker, older brother of PGA Tour player Brandt Snedeker, posted a second-round 71 on Monday and at 3 over for the tournament, leads his division by a shot.
Bryan Rodgers of Knoxville, Tennessee, moved ahead of fellow Tennessean John Bailey and Bob Beck, the top-ranked Super Senior in the Golfweek Senior National Amateur Rankings, with a second-round 73. Rodgers, at 8 over for the tournament, now has a one-shot lead on those two players, who backed up to 78 and 75, respectively, on Monday.
Besides Sanders in the Senior division, the only other round under par on Monday came from Legends division leader Greg Osborne, whose impressive back-nine 33 left him with a second-round 70 as well. After an opening 77, Osborne, the 2025 Legends Player of the Year, is now 5 over and has a three-shot lead on Marshall Morgan of Fort Worth, Texas.
In the Super Legends division, Sam Robinson of Jacksonville, Florida, moved into the lead with a 74, which bumped him 10 shots ahead of first-round leader Bill Engel of St. Augustine, Florida. Robinson, Engel and John Osborne, in third place, all played college golf for Virginia Tech.
