Section IV Division II Championships
Gavin Nordberg and Yanni Drapaniotis won titles for Unatego/Franklin/Unadilla Valley, and Landon Shaffer won a title for Deposit/Hancock, which had the top local finishes at the Section IV Division II Championships on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.
Tioga won the Division II title with 187 points, 67 more than second-place Waverly. Deposit/Hancock placed third in the 24-team field with 117 points, 4.5 better than fourth-place U/F/UV. Newark Valley placed fifth, 2.5 points behind U/F/UV and 3.5 points better than sixth-place Walton/Delaware Academy. Oneonta placed eighth with 76.5 points, .5 better than Chenango Valley. Greene/Oxford placed 10th with 74 points. Norwich placed 17th with 46.5 points. Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville placed 20th with 23.5 points. Sidney placed 23rd with nine points.
Nordberg won the title at 132 with a 15-4 majority decision of Kade Mustin from G/O in the finals. He went 3-0 in the tournament and is 39-1 this season, according to CNYwrestling records.
Drapaniotis went 3-0 at 190 pounds with three first-round pins. He beat Titus Callahan from Newark Valley in the finals, pinning him in 1:49. Drapaniotis, who placed third in the state in Division II at 190 pounds last season, is 40-0 this season, according to CNYwrestling.
Shaffer went 3-0 at 138 pounds with three technical falls. He beat Tioga’s Jayden Duncanson in the finals, 19-2. Shaffer, who placed third in the state in Division II at 131 pounds last year, is 42-1 this season, according to CNYwrestling records.
Norwich’s Maverick Beckwith won a title at 150 pounds. Beckwith, who won Division II state titles at 108 pounds in 2024 and 124 pounds in 2025, is 40-2 this season, according to CNYwrestling records.
Placing second locally were Mustin, at 132 pounds, Sava Gonopolskiy from U/F/UV at 103 pounds, Justin Somers from Walton/Delaware Academy at 144 pounds, Alan Little from Oneonta at 157 pounds, Jaxon Backus from W/DA at 175 pounds and Nolan Boyles from U/F/UV at 215 pounds.
In the consolation finals: Oneonta’s Clayton Ritter beat W/DA’s Aiden Branigan at 118 pounds. D/H’s Jason Canedo placed third at 132 pounds. Amari Champen placed fourth at 138 pounds. Asaac Mead from D/H placed third at 150 pounds. Troy Braman from G/O placed third at 157 pounds. Jackson Velez from D/H placed fourth at 167 pounds. Donte Wrench from G/O placed third at 285 pounds.
Section III Division II Championships
Cooperstown/Milford will send two wrestlers to the state tournament in two weeks after they placed high at the Section III Division II Championships on Saturday, Feb. 14, at SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
Cooperstown senior Max Koffer placed second at 132 pounds. Cooperstown senior Andrew Spaulding placed third at 144 pounds.
Koffer went 2-1, losing a 10-3 decision to Zakk LaRue from Copenhagen in the finals. It was a rematch of last week’s Class D finals, which LaRue won by pin.
Spaulding went 3-1 in the tournament and got his 150th varsity win with his second victory. He lost in the semifinals to Talon Kimball from Camden, 16-7. Kimball placed second. Spaulding came back from his loss to win two more matches, beating Donavan Fraher from Marcellus/Onondaga in the consolation finals, 7-3.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Division II Championships will take place at MVP Arena in Albany on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
