India’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games and plans for the growth of motorsport were among the key points discussed during an informal briefing by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The government has provided ₹702.86 crore under the Assistance to National Sports Federations (ACTC) scheme for preparations for the Asian Games. The support covers international competitions, domestic and overseas training, equipment, foreign experts and other requirements.

India will send a 501-member athlete contingent to the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which will be held from September 19 to October 4. The athletes will compete across 36 sports and 259 events, with 356 medals up for grabs.

The contingent will have 310 Asian Games debutants, while 65 athletes are part of the KheloIndia Athlete programme. Athletics has the largest sport-specific contingent, with 78 athletes.

India had its best-ever Asian Games medal tally at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, winning 106 medals, including 28 golds, and finishing fourth in the overall standings.

Focus on Motorsport

The Ministry also shared plans to develop India’s motorsport ecosystem. A Task Force has been formed to study the challenges faced by the sport, including taxation issues, and suggest a comprehensive motorsport policy.

The panel will also explore Public-Private Partnership models and examine the economic, tourism and investment benefits of hosting major motorsport events in India.

One of the biggest talking points is the possibility of bringing Formula One back to India. The Task Force will assess the feasibility of hosting an F1 Grand Prix in the country in 2028.
