The eighth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games will be organised in Telangana in November 2026, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya made this announcement on Wednesday.

The event is expected to bring more than 8,000 athletes, officials and support staff from the country. Telangana will now become the second southern state to host the Games in the last three years after Tamil Nadu organised it in the 2024 edition, while Bihar hosted the last edition in 2025.

Announcing the decision, Dr. Mandaviya said the choice reflects the Centre’s effort to take major sporting events to different parts of the country. “In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to spread major national events in all regions of the country, it is appropriate that Telangana should get the opportunity to host the prestigious Khelo India Youth Games,” said Dr. Mandaviya in an official statement. “The state has the infrastructure and the enthusiasm to host these Games, where at least 8000 athletes, officials, and support staff are expected to participate.”

The Sports Minister also said the timing of the Games will help young athletes compete after the Asian Games in Japan. “We should see some quality performances this year. The Khelo India Youth Games 2026 are coming on the back of the Asian Games in Japan, and our athletes should be in peak form. The Games in Telangana will be a good time to celebrate as upcoming athletes will be able to see their heroes up close,” said Dr. Mandaviya.

In the last edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, in May 2025, Maharashtra topped the medal table, followed by Haryana and Rajasthan. Hosts Bihar finished at 15th position, while Telangana ended in 13th place. In the 2024 edition, host Tamil Nadu finished second while Maharashtra finished first, Telangana, on the other hand, secured sixth place.

The Bihar edition featured 28 sports and the medals were awarded in 27 disciplines. E-sports made its debut as a demonstration event. A total of 26 records were broken during the Games, including 13 national youth records in weightlifting, while the remaining records came in athletics.

The Khelo India Youth Games is India’s national multi-sport event for young athletes. It provides a platform for emerging talent to compete at the national level which helps in strengthen the country’s sporting ecosystem.
