Former Michael Clarke has warned those calling for MS Dhoni to retire, saying the game will miss the veteran wicketkeeper-batter once he decides to hang up his boots.
Speculation surrounding Dhoni’s future has once again intensified, as he is yet to play a single match in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. After suffering a knee injury last month, Dhoni has continued to work on his fitness in a bid to return to the field.
“I think people need to be very careful wishing him to retire because once he’s gone, the game will miss him,” Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
Uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s availability has become a major talking point ahead of every Chennai Super Kings (CSK) match.
“I think it’s really up to MS, to be honest. I think what a lot of people don’t understand from MS’s position is that he still wants to play, and that’s why he’s playing. I don’t think he worries about anything else. He’s fit enough, strong enough and healthy enough, and he’s still got the love for the game, so that’s why he wants to play,” Clarke said.
Highlighting Dhoni’s impact on the IPL, Clarke echoed the famous phrase once used by Harsha Bhogle — “MS Dhoni is CSK”.
“I think MS Dhoni is CSK,” Clarke said. “If you go and watch a CSK game, everyone’s got number seven Dhoni on their yellow jersey. In terms of sponsorships coming into CSK, I can guarantee every sponsor would want MS Dhoni to be part of that team. He’s that significant. He’s that big. He’s that loved in India.”
It will be interesting to see whether Dhoni features in CSK’s next match against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 10 in Chennai.
