Arjun Erigaisi beats Zhu Jiner with calm endgame play in Round 6

Arjun Erigaisi (PC-Peter Doggers)

Arjun Erigaisi produced another composed performance in Round 6 of the TePe Sigeman and Co Chess Tournament 2026, defeating Zhu Jiner in a long and hard-fought encounter. Playing with the black pieces, Arjun gradually took control of the game and converted his advantage confidently in the endgame.

The game began with a Pirc Defence setup, where both players developed calmly before the position quickly became sharp in the middlegame. Zhu pushed aggressively on the kingside and even advanced her pawn deep into Arjun’s territory, but Arjun stayed patient and found active counterplay on the queenside and in the centre.

A key moment came after the queens were exchanged. Arjun’s pieces became more active, especially his knight and rook, while Zhu started running low on time. Arjun slowly improved his position move by move and entered the endgame with better coordination.

Even though Zhu tried to hold the position together, Arjun’s technique stood out. He activated his king, pushed his pawns forward, and kept creating threats from both sides of the board. His movement with the pawn became decisive, and Zhu could no longer stop the pressure. Just when the position was completely winning for Arjun, Zhu resigned.

The victory keeps Arjun firmly in contention near the top of the standings as the tournament heads into its final stages. What stood out once again was his calm decision-making under pressure and his ability to convert small advantages into full points.

In the other games of Round 6, Jorden van Foreest and Nils Grandelius played out a draw. Magnus Carlsen defeated Andy Woodward, while Yagiz Erdogmus and Nodirbek Abdusattorov also shared the points.
