Chiefs target pondering next move

Kaizer Chiefs target Elias Mokwana is pondering his next move after parting ways with Tunisian giants Esperance.

Mokwana is now a free agent and can join a club of his choice even after the local transfer window in South Africa closes later this month.

According to sources close to the former Sekhukhune United attacker, there are options on the table both abroad and in the PSL.

“Elias is relaxed because there are offers for him but, he wants to take his time before committing his future to anyone,” one source told Mgosi Squad.

“It’s not just here in the PSL but there is interest from overseas clubs. The most important thing for him is to win his place in the national team back.”

Another source added: “He was unlucky not to go to the World Cup with Bafana but it’s in the past now. You can’t rule our Chiefs at this stage but, he wants play regularly again and he will make his decision soon.”

Mokwana joined Esperance from Babina Noko in 2024, but he could well be on his way back to South Africa after his time at the club came to an end.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem, with a view to making the deal permanent, but Hazem opted not to take up the option.

KCB Rugby Club defends Kenya National Sevens Circuit title

KCB Rugby Club successfully defended the Kenya National Sevens Circuit title after finishing the 2026 season with 115 points, sealing the overall championship at the conclusion of the Christie 7s at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday evening.

The Bankers were crowned champions for the second consecutive year after a consistent campaign that saw them win three of the six legs of the circuit – the Prinsloo 7s, Kabeberi 7s, and Embu 7s.

KCB wrapped up the season by finishing third at the Christie 7s, overcoming arch-rivals Kabras Sugar 5-0 in the third-place playoff to put the finishing touch on another successful campaign.

Head Coach Andrew Amonde said: “Winning the National 7s Circuit is never easy, and defending the title makes this achievement even more special. The players have shown tremendous commitment, discipline, and consistency throughout the season. We had our challenges along the way, but the team remained focused on the bigger objective, which was to retain the overall title.”

KCB’s journey at the Christie 7s saw them produce a commanding performance in the quarter-finals, thrashing NYS Spades 31-5 to book a place in the last four.

However, the Bankers fell short in their semi-final encounter after losing 12-19 to Strathmore Leos, before regrouping to edge Kabras Sugar in the third-place playoff.

KCB player Nygel Amaitsa said the title was a reward for the collective effort and hard work demonstrated by the entire squad throughout the circuit.

“This has been a demanding circuit, and every team came prepared to compete. For us, the focus was always to remain consistent and collect as many points as possible in every tournament. To finish as champions and successfully defend our title is a proud moment for the entire team and the KCB family,” said Amaitsa.

The overall triumph further underlines KCB Rugby’s dominance in the shorter version of the game, with the Bankers combining strong performances across the circuit to retain the crown they won last year.

With the National 7s Circuit now concluded, attention for the Bankers shifts to the 15-a-side version of the game as the team begins preparations for the next phase of the rugby calendar.

KCB Rugby will be seeking to carry the momentum and winning mentality built during the successful 7s campaign into the upcoming 15s season.

Hansen: Boks got the rubs of the green

Steve Hansen reckons the Springboks earned the favour of the officials over the course of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series that left the All Blacks with plenty to work on.

The World Cup-winning Kiwi coach shared his thoughts on the latest episode of the Rugby Unity podcast, after South Africa beat New Zealand 43-28 in Baltimore on Saturday that secured a 3-1 series win for Rassie Erasmus’ men.

He touched on the concept and value of the eight-match tour, the Kiwis winning five successive games that included the first Test before the Boks bounced back to claim bragging rights.

“You see the two top teams in the world – teams that have got great rivalries – play each other once and then it’s forgotten,” Hansen said.

“But when you have a tour like they’ve had, you get to see them improve …. It becomes a battle in its own right.

“When you break it down, South Africa were just too good in the end. In probably every Test other than the first one, there were just moments – whether it was three or four moments in the Test – that swung it their way.

“They got a couple of rubs of the green, maybe in the last one with some of the refereeing decisions,” the former All Blacks boss added.

“But when you’re going forward and playing well, you normally get those rubs of the green, so you’ve just got to take it on the chin.”

Hansen highlighted the set-piece, high ball and breakdown as key focus areas for Dave Rennie and co going forward.

“There are probably three areas I think we need to challenge ourselves on. South Africa is very good at that. They’re very good at getting over the ball,” he said.

EX-ALL BLACKS: Boks a step ahead of everyone

“I thought our scrum on our ball was okay, but on their ball we didn’t challenge them enough. There were a lot of penalties in that area that allowed them to get into driving maul situations where they eventually scored tries.

“We haven’t mastered the high ball as well as they have. We moved the lineout around a little bit, made their big fellas have to move and chase us. When we did that, we got clean ball, but we were still too slow off the ground when going into a tempo race with them.

“Everything that’s there that we need to work on is very fixable, and very quickly.”

OPINION: Jordaan’s re-election raises a bigger question for SAFA

The outrage over Danny Jordaan’s re-election for a fourth term as South African Football Association (SAFA) president is understandable. There is an old saying that a good dancer knows when to leave the stage.

Jordaan has certainly had his time in the spotlight. After all, this is a man who previously said he would leave office at the end of his third term and hand over the baton to someone else.

There are obvious reasons why his re-election has been met with resistance. One of them is the fact that Jordaan is facing fraud charges. Yes, everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but having a football association led by someone with such a cloud hanging over him is hardly ideal.

A SAFA president should not be judged solely by the performance of the national team. The entire football ecosystem needs to function from grassroots football. Some SAFA Local Football Associations have reportedly not received their grants, while clubs such as Mathaithai FC have even pulled out of the ABC Motsepe League because of non-payment.

Jordaan did not re-elect himself. That is why the bigger question should be, why are some SAFA regions and NEC members so convinced that a 75-year-old Jordaan remains the best person to lead the future of South African football?

I am not one to speculate, but it is difficult to believe there is nothing to be gained by those who continue to back him. Questions around the reported R153,000 honorarium paid to NEC members ahead of the elective congress only add to the suspicion.

Then there is Jordaan’s relationship with the football-loving public. He rarely makes himself available for live interviews where he can engage directly with supporters and answer difficult questions. Perhaps, just perhaps, if he did, the public would better understand why he is so hell-bent on remaining SAFA president.

Leadership means accessibility and accountability. Instead, Jordaan plays politics and we saw this when Jordaan unveiled coach Pitso Mosimane. He accused the media of not speaking to SAFA. Yet the irony is that Jordaan himself can be extremely difficult to access. One thing is clear, the majority of public want change, but it looks like those entrusted with leading the game have different ideas.
