Hansen: Kriel contributed to Cane red card
Former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says the Springboks have also been guilty of the gamesmanship for which Cam Roigard has been criticised. chickenroad.qpon
Roigard came under fire following an incident in the second half of New Zealand’s 29-24 defeat at FNB Stadium last Saturday, when he remained on the ground holding his head after a clash with Cobus Reinach.
The flashpoint occurred after the Boks had been awarded a penalty try from a dominant scrum. Roigard held onto Reinach after the whistle and the Bok scrumhalf responded by flipping his opposite number backwards onto the turf.
Replays showed Roigard’s head did not make contact with the ground, but referee Nika Amashukeli reviewed the incident with his fellow officials and penalised Reinach, allowing New Zealand to restart from halfway.

Former Bok captain Jean de Villiers subsequently accused Roigard of “taking a dive”, while former England scrumhalf Ben Youngs was also critical of the All Blacks No 9.
Speaking on the Rugby Unity podcast, Hansen conceded that Roigard should not have reacted as he did, but argued that such gamesmanship was not unique to New Zealand.
“You don’t want it so he probably shouldn’t do it,” Hansen said. “There are people diving all the time. The way the rules are with head knocks, you’ve only got to go back to the last World Cup and the Sam Cane incident.”

Hansen was referring to the 2023 World Cup final in Paris, when All Blacks captain Cane was sent off following a high tackle on Bok centre Jesse Kriel.
The former All Blacks coach suggested Kriel had drawn attention to the contact in an attempt to influence the officials.
“Kriel was OK and then all of a sudden he’s holding his head. It’s how you play the ref to get his attention and it’s in our game.
“Do we want it in our game? No we don’t and no team is innocent.”

Sharks edge Lions at Ellis Park
The Sharks scored two late tries to snatch a narrow victory against the Lions in a pre-season thriller at Ellis Park on Friday afternoon.
The visitors won 33-31, having thrashed the SWD Eagles 66-0 in their other warm-up last week. The hosts’ previous outing had been a 41-35 defeat to the All Blacks.
Both sides scored five tries in their final fixture before the 2026-27 URC season.
The Sharks made the brighter start and opened the scoring through wing Litelihle Bester.
The Lions responded to take a 19-14 lead into half-time before former Blitzbok JC Pretorius struck just seconds after the restart.
However, with several of the Lions’ first-choice players having left the field, the hosts’ defence faltered late in the contest and the Sharks took advantage, crossing for two tries.
The Durban-based side will host the Ospreys in their URC season opener on 26 September, while the Lions welcome Leinster to Ellis Park on the same day.

Rennes – OM : Les compos officielles

Injury mars Sharks win
Coach JP Pietersen is sweating on the fitness of one of the Sharks’ backline players following Friday’s 33-31 win against the Lions at Ellis Park.
Wing Yaw Penxe was forced off with a back injury during the pre-season thriller, the Sharks’ final warm-up before their Vodacom URC campaign gets under way against the Ospreys at Kings Park on 26 September.
“Hopefully it’s not too serious,” Pietersen said as quoted by IOL.
There was better news regarding centres Jurenzo Julius and Murray Koster, who missed the match after picking up minor injuries in the Sharks’ 66-0 victory against the SWD Eagles in George last week.
“Jurenzo’s got a bit of an ankle niggle; it’s not too serious. Him and Murray Koster, hopefully they can train next week,” Pietersen said.
Flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse got 40 minutes under his belt at Ellis Park, while lock Jason Jenkins also returned to action.
REPORT: Sharks edge Lions at Ellis Park
Pietersen was particularly encouraged by the resilience of his young players after the Lions repeatedly put them under pressure.
“Normally teams go away when that happens,” he said. “And normally we, as the Sharks, fall away.
“And then the Lions bring a whole new 15 players on. We always struggle when we see things like that.
“To see the young kids stay in the fight until the end, and the way they handled themselves and found a way to get back into the game, was beautiful.”
