Tanya Chaudhary keeps Baghpat's hammer-throw legacy alive with national record

Tanya Chaudhary has etched her name in history by setting a new national hammer throw record, achieving an impressive distance of 68.35m. This surpasses the former best of 67.02m set by Anushka Yadav during the Indian Athletics Series Final. Despite facing injuries and a tough qualification journey, she is now gearing up for the Asian Games in Japan, with an eye on hitting the coveted 70m mark in future events.

Aman Baroniya opens up on his struggles ahead of Asian Games debut in wrestling, says ‘I was young and had…’

Aman is the youngest wrestler in India’s Greco-Roman team for the Asian Games. His road to the tournament has been a difficult one.

After just playing at the U-17 World Championship in August 2023, he tore his right knee badly and was in for ACL surgery within a week. He then spent the next few years dealing with setbacks and working hard to regain his fitness and return to competition. sportbet.reviews

Aman opens up on three surgeries and tough road to Asian Games

“Training is going well right now. This is my first Asian Games, so I am feeling very excited about it. This is a big moment for me. But the last few years have not been easy for me. I have had three surgeries. It was a very hard phase, both mentally and physically. But now my body is feeling good, I am training well, and I just want to give my best at the Games,” Aman said.

After his first surgery, Aman admitted that both his doctor and he pushed him to recover faster. However, his knee developed an infection. Due to this, he needs to go for a second surgery in October 2023.

“I was young, and I had that jawani ka josh (youthful exuberance), I thought I would get back on the mat quickly and return straight to my peak. That was a mistake, mine and the doctor’s both. Because of that, I got a knee infection, and I needed another surgery to fix it,” he said.

How Aman’s father, coach and roommate plays a crucial role in his life

After the injury setback, he continued his rehabilitation into 2024 and returned to training in April of the same year. Sadly, he suffered another ACL injury in the same knee, within a week, which followed him to the third surgery. These injury setbacks made him stay away from the mat for a year. His parents also asked him to focus on his studies after facing injury struggles. But, during that period, Aman realized that he was close to walking away from the sport altogether. At that time period, his coach and roommate played a crucial role for him as they kept pushing him to get back on the mat.

“There was a time when I felt like quitting, because of back to back injuries. Even my parents told me, ab padhai pe dhyan do (focus on your studies now), because they were worried about seeing me get hurt so many times. But my coach and my roommate did not let me think like that. They kept telling me, you will come back, just give it time. They pushed me every single day to get back on the mat. And when I did come back, I won a gold medal in the senior category. That medal meant a lot to me, it showed me that all the hard work was worth it.”

In Aman’s life, wrestling played a crucial role as his father was also a wrestler. But never got the support to take the sport further. His father played an important role in his life as he was the one to put his son in the match before sending him off to train at an academy.

“My father was also a wrestler, but he could not go far in the sport because he did not get the support at that time, there was no one to guide him properly. He always had this dream in his heart, and I think he saw that same dream for me. He is the one who got me into wrestling, he is the reason I am here today. In the beginning, he used to train me himself, on the ground near our village. Then when he saw I was serious about it, he sent me to an academy so that I could train more professionally.”

Rohit Sharma: ‘October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then’

[popcorn number="597" desc="No. of runs scored by Rohit Sharma in the 2023 ODI World Cup — the second-most after Virat Kohli (765)" class="Default"]

October 2027 is still far away, said star Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma on Thursday as he responded to a query on whether he would play the ODI World Cup at that time.

The one-line response came on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai, a rare comment from the former captain amid swirling speculation around his participation in the mega-event and the course his career will take given he no longer plays the T20I and Test formats.

“October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then,” said Rohit when asked about his participation.

The 2027 ODI World Cup is to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Rohit was also asked whether, in case of an Indian title win, there would be an open bus parade to celebrate with fans much like 2024 when the team led by Rohit carried out a victory parade in Mumbai after its T20 World Cup triumph in the West Indies. “....I do not think a bus parade would be possible now,” Rohit replied.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has made it clear that there is no room for speculation around the batting great as he is batting well. Rohit had scored a century in his last outing for India in ODIs.

“He is playing superbly in all matches. So what more do you want? In the last match [against England], he scored 138 runs, so why is there speculation? I do not want to give some fodder for the speculators,” Saikia told reporters after the BCCI’s review meeting here at its headquarters some days ago.

Delhi High Court :

The Gopichand Model – Why India Should Now Think of Badminton Dominance

My final takeaway from an afternoon at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy was perhaps the most overwhelming. I had gone expecting world-class badminton courts. I came away thinking about an ecosystem and an understanding of what high performance actually means. Consider what has been assembled in Gachibowli. Across the academy complex are multiple badminton courts, a full-size heated swimming pool, gymnasium, running track, yoga and aerobics studio, physiotherapy and massage facilities, and dedicated recovery rooms with ice baths and steam. There is accommodation for around 100, an in-house cafeteria and even a conference room specifically for coaches.

But the real story lies beyond the hardware. The high-performance ecosystem incorporates nutrition, physiology, psychology, physiotherapy and biomechanics, alongside strength and conditioning, sports research, and video and performance analysis. In other words, an athlete doesn’t merely come here to play badminton. He or she comes here to become an athlete.

Training, fitness, nutrition, recovery, injury prevention, rehabilitation, mental conditioning and match preparation become parts of the same process. As we left the academy, Boria Majumdar insisted that we see the high-performance laboratory, where injury management and rehabilitation are conducted in line with world-class equipment and systems. And watching the academy function, what struck me was the discipline binding all of this together. There was no chaos masquerading as intensity. There is a tranquil calm about the place, as though the training had structure, the coaches had roles and the almost invisible administrators had responsibilities. That may ultimately be Gopi’s greatest achievement.

India often confuses sporting infrastructure with sporting ecosystems. We build stadiums, purchase equipment and announce centres of excellence. But a treadmill doesn’t create an athlete. An ice bath doesn’t improve performance by itself. A sports scientist cannot compensate for poor coaching. Excellence emerges when all these elements are integrated around the athlete by someone who understands how the pieces fit together.

And that prompted one tantalising thought. I thought Boria articulated it rather well: “What if India could create just one such badminton ecosystem in every state, each anchored by one exceptional Indian coach?” Not another 28 Gopichands… that is impossible. But 28 coaches empowered to think like institution builders. Give them world-class courts, sports science, recovery, strength and conditioning, nutrition, analytics and administrative support. Give them autonomy, hold them accountable and then give them ten years. Suddenly, talent doesn’t have to travel hundreds or thousands of kilometres to Hyderabad. A gifted child in Assam, Kerala, Rajasthan, Odisha or Madhya Pradesh could enter the same performance pathway closer to home.

India has already proved that this model can work. This academy has been associated with the development of Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Parupalli Kashyap and Sai Praneeth, among others. That isn’t an isolated champion. It is evidence of a system producing excellence across generations. Which is why I left Gachibowli thinking that Indian badminton’s next great leap may not require discovering another miracle.

The blueprint already exists; we need to build the coaches and simply replicate the ecosystem. Take sports science to the talent rather than waiting for talent to find its way to Hyderabad. Create 28 genuine centres of excellence and give the project a decade. Do that, and the ambition need no longer be occasional Olympic medals or a few players in the world’s top ten. It could be something far more audacious: India dominating the world stage in badminton!
