Gurnoor Brar returns for Duleep Trophy, Auqib Nabi targets county stint

North Zone have added Gurnoor Brar to their Duleep Trophy semi-final squad for their match against South Zone, beginning on Sunday at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
On Friday, Gurnoor reached Bengaluru from Colombo along with Devdutt Padikkal, Prasidh Krishna, Sarfaraz Khan and Saransh Jain.

He linked up with the North Zone squad after India’s Test series against Sri Lanka, which ended in a 1-0 series win on Thursday. The tall pacer did not play a single Test, as Prasidh was preferred over him by the think tank, but he is most likely to feature in the semi-final.

Despite not having made his debut yet, Gurnoor remains firmly in the selectors’ plans, which is why he is all set to play in the Duleep Trophy. Saransh Jain, who made his debut in the second Test against Sri Lanka, will be available for selection for Central Zone in their game against East Zone, starting at the CoE on August 30. tbzikra.org

This aligns with the selectors’ diktat of making players play domestic matches whenever there is an opportunity.

Meanwhile, Auqib Nabi could be set for a short spell in the English county circuit, provided his visa formalities are completed in time. The selectors are understood to want the pacer to get valuable exposure to conditions that are more conducive to seam bowling, instead of featuring in the Duleep Trophy at this stage. Nabi has emerged as one of the most effective bowlers in Indian conditions with the SG ball over the past two seasons.

A successful county stint could strengthen his case for a place in India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.

Should the county move fail to materialise, Nabi is expected to return to competitive action with India A. He could feature in their opening match of the two-game series against Australia A in Puducherry, beginning on September 22.

Sri Lanka began their Women’s Asia Cup 2026 campaign in ruthless fashion as the defending champions thumped UAE by nine wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

After bundling out the home side for just 79 runs, Sri Lanka chased down the target with nine wickets and 12.1 overs to spare, handing themselves a huge net run rate (NRR) boost along with two crucial points. It also turned out to be Sri Lanka’s biggest-ever WT20I win in terms of balls remaining.

Dismal batting from UAE

After being asked to bat first, the home side completely faltered with their batting approach. Captain Esha Oza top-scored with 18 off 24 while a few others reached double figures. However, UAE were eventually bundled out for just 79 in 19.5 overs.

Impressive T20I debut for Chethana Vimukthi as SL pacers shine

Chethana Vimukthi, playing her first T20I, left an immediate mark with an impressive spell of 3/16 in four overs. She was well supported by her pace bowling partner Mithali Ayodha, who also picked up three wickets for 14 runs in 3.5 overs.

On a slowish Dubai track, where spinners generally tend to find assistance, Sri Lanka’s pace duo stood out, combining for six wickets while conceding only 30 runs in 7.5 overs. Vimukthi was also named the Player of the Match.

Attacking opening pair and huge NRR boost

Both Sri Lanka openers – Imesha Dulani and skipper Chamari Athapaththu – adopted an ultra-aggressive approach, adding 57 runs in just 5.5 overs.

An unfortunate run-out at the non-striker’s end saw Dulani dismissed for 25 off 18, but Athapaththu remained unbeaten on 48 off 25, striking at 192. The defending champions had announced their arrival in style.

With this huge win, Sri Lanka now have an NRR of +6.263.

Argentina faced the toughest task in women’s hockey – taking on the three-time defending champions, the Netherlands, on their home soil in the FIH Hockey World Cup final in Amsterdam on Saturday. But they kept their composure when it mattered most, drawing 1-1 in regulation time and then edging the dominant Dutch 3-1 in a shootout to claim the world title for the first time in 16 years.

The two sides were meeting in a women’s Hockey World Cup final for the fifth time, and the opening half lived up to the occasion as both battled for early control. Possession was largely shared, and chances were at a premium. The most notable of those saw Argentina goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino produce an excellent save after coming out of goal to deny Pien Dicke after a solo run to keep the scores level.

The Netherlands began to build more momentum as the half progressed. Their persistence finally paid off just 51 seconds before half-time when they were awarded their first penalty corner of the match. Yibbi Jansen stepped up and whipped the ball into the left side of the goal, sending a roar around the packed stadium and giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead at the break.

Argentina had several opportunities to level the scores from penalty corners in the third quarter but were unable to convert. They kept pressing, though, and with six minutes remaining in the fourth period, another penalty corner finally presented them with the breakthrough they needed. María Granatto pounced on the rebound and fired home the equaliser, setting up a tense finish. Neither side could find a winner in the closing minutes, sending the match into a shootout to decide the world champions, which Argentina edged 3-1.

An elated Argentinian goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino was named as Player of the Match and said afterwards: “I really have no words for this. We were looking forward to this moment… Holland is a really tough opponent, and we knew it was going to be like that. So it was like fight each ball and the goal will come, and then just have fun in the shootout.

“I think it was something the team was looking forward to two tournaments ago in the Olympics, in the other World Cup. I think we really deserve it. We were a really good team along all the tournament, and I’m really proud of the girls that were fighting with me in this tournament,” she added.

Earlier, Belgium ended a 48-year wait for a World Cup medal with a gritty 1-0 victory over Australia in the bronze-medal playoff.

Both teams showed they had shaken off their semi-final disappointment as they came out with fighting intent, although few scoring chances were created in the opening quarter. The best opportunity of the period fell to Australia’s Steph Kershaw on a breakaway, but, one-on-one with the keeper, the final shot was pulled wide. The deadlock was broken in the second quarter, with Belgium making the most of their first penalty corner of the match. Charlotte Englebert rocketed the ball into the bottom right corner to put her side 1-0 up in the 20^th minute.

The Hockeyroos pushed to find the equaliser, particularly in a hard-fought final quarter, and they pulled off their keeper with just over four minutes remaining but couldn’t breach the solid Belgian defence. The Red Panthers held on for the win and a return to the World Cup podium for the first time since 1978.

Belgium’s Player of the Match Charlotte Englebert was thrilled to finish on a high, saying afterwards: “If we saw how we played the semi-final, we knew we had it in us to win the bronze medal today, and we kind of made it not an option to lose today. I think that’s what we did. We, we played until the last second. It was not easy because we had one striker less, so we had to run more, but it was the last game of the tournament, so it was a tough game, but I’m really, really proud of the team.”
