Asian Games 2026: India secures women’s compound archery team gold, beats China in final

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 30 (ANI): The Indian archery trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep secured a sensational gold medal for the nation, beating China in the final of the women’s compound archery team event at the ongoing Asian Games in Japan on Wednesday.

This is India’s seventh gold at the Asian Games and takes the tally to 53 medals, including 21 silvers and 25 bronze medals. They equalled South Korea’s world record of 238, set in 2014, to secure the gold.

China started the gold medal match with three nines, finishing the first rotation with 27 points. On the other hand, the Indian trio started with three tens, making it a 30-27 lead for India.

China bounced back with two tens in the second rotation, while India also responded with three tens, making it India lead of 60-57 at the end of the second rotation. One of China’s earlier nines was converted to a 10, making it a 60-58 lead for India.

In the third rotation, China started with a nine and two back-to-back tens. Chikitha registered India’s first nine, dropping a point, while Prithika and Jyothi each scored 10s each, keeping India’s lead intact at 89-87.

Halfway point, India was leading 119-116, with China registering two 10s and a nine to end the first half, while India maintained a perfect record of three 10s.

The second half started with three tens from China and a nine and two tens from India, with India still maintaining a two-point lead at 148-146.

China just could not get those three perfect tens, while India got theirs in the next rotation, and India’s lead increased by one point to 178-175. After a review, one of China’s early nine-point was upgraded to 10, making it 178-176 in favour of India.

China slipped with 10 and two nines, while India’s two tens from Prithika and Jyothi kept India in the lead of 208-204.

India finally beat China, managing a perfect 10 each to conclude the final.

Earlier, the Indian women’s compound archery team set up a gold medal match against China, beating South Korea in a tense semifinal.

India beat South Korea by 235-233, by the barest of margins. With South Korea piling up pressure in the second half of the match and levelling the scores at 175-all, the Indians first took a one-point lead, and then two 10s from Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep and a nine from Jyothi Surekha Vennam helped India seal a two-point win.

Prithika and Jyothi were the stars for India, shooting six tens out of eight attempts, with Chikitha getting five 10s in eight attempts.

The Indian trio of Jyothi, Chikitha and Prithika started off well, with Prithika managing a nine and Jyothi following it with a 10. South Korea had a fine start with three 10s, as per ESPN.

India responded back with convincing 10s from the trio in the second rotation, and South Korea managed to level the scores 59-59 at the end of second rotation.

During the third rotation, India was slightly rocky at the start, with Chikitha managing only a nine, but Prithika and Jyothi made up for it by firing perfect 10s. South Korea started with a nine as well, and then the same score on the second and third shot helped India reach a lead for the first time in the match, at 88-86.

India had another incredible rotation, with 10s raining from Chikitha, Prithika and Jyothi, while the 14-year-old Kang managed her third nine in a row and the other two getting perfect 10s. Halfway through the semifinal, India led 118-115.

During the second half, Koreans got to shoot first, with India tasked with matching their opponents. South Korea made a comeback at the start of the second half, managing three 10s. On the other hand for India, Chikitha and Prithika shot perfect 10s while Jyothi shot her first nine of the match. Nonetheless, Team India led 147-145.

South Korea continued to turn tables with another perfect set of three tens, while Chikitha and Prithika added two nines and Jyothi a 10, bringing the scores level to 175-175.

Later, two 10s came from Korea and a nine from Kang, which was responded by a nine from Chikitha and 10s from two other Indians. India led by one point at 205-204, with one set of arrows from each player to go.

After South Korea finished the semifinal with a score of 233, two tens from Chikitha and Prithika and a nine from Jyothi helped India secure a win by two points, making it 235-233. (ANI)

The Indian Cricket Team became the first to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles earlier this year, and the first to win the tournament three times.

Then came the IPL, where the entire Indian team played. The Sri Lankans then hosted Afghanistan for one Test match and three T20Is, winning them all comfortably. Then came the disastrous two T20Is against Ireland, both of which the Men in Blue lost, resulting in their first-ever series loss to the Irish.

Next came a tour to England, where the Indians were thrashed 4-0 in a T20I series, then lost 2-1 in an ODI series. Most recently, they defeated Sri Lanka 1-0 in a two-Test series, before whitewashing Afghanistan 3-0 in T20Is.

While the ODI Indian squad is currently hosting the West Indies for ODIs at home, the T20 team is playing in the 2026 Asian Games. Here, in their quarter-final game, India got a bye due to rain against Afghanistan.

As for the Sri Lankan Cricket Team, they made it to the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup, but were knocked out before the knockouts.

After the IPL, they toured the West Indies, where the Lankan Lions beat the hosts 1-0 in a three-game ODI series but lost the subsequent Test series. Most recently, they faced India in two home Tests, losing the first and drawing the second.

Then came the tour to England, where the Lankans lost the T20I and the ODI series comprehensively. Now, their second-rate team is representing the nation in the 2026 Asian Games, where Sri Lanka got a bye in their quarter-final game against Nepal because the match was washed out due to rain.

While only non-Test nations have played on this ground before the Asian Games, the pitches here are very typical for T20S, which means they are conducive to batting. On a fresh surface, the ball travels nicely to the bat, making run-scoring easier. The spinners do make things a little more interesting in the second innings. So, in the games where teams of equal quality face off, after winning the toss, a team would usually decide to bat first and put up a decent total.

“Aditi Ashok a strong medal contender”: IGPL director Manav Jaini ahead of Asian Games golf event

New Delhi [India], September 30 (ANI): Indian golfer Aditi Ashok remains a strong medal contender at the Asian Games 2026, said Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) director Manav Jaini, who expressed confidence in both the men’s and women’s golf teams bringing home medals from the continental event.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the MoU signing between IGPL and Special Olympics Bharat on Tuesday, Jaini praised Aditi’s performances and said she is currently the leading Indian women’s professional golfer.

“Aditi is currently the top player among Indian women professionals; she is the leading player. I believe Aditi Ashok is definitely a strong medal contender. However, I have full faith in both teams—if they play to their potential, there is a strong hope for medals from both," Jaini said.

Aditi Ashok had won a silver medal in the previous edition of the Asian Games, and expectations remain high for the Indian golfer ahead of the upcoming competition.

Jaini also backed India’s men’s and women’s golf teams, describing both squads as exceptionally strong and expressing hope that they would secure medals at the Games.

“Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams sent to the Asian Games are exceptionally strong. I am very hopeful that both teams will bring home medals," he added.

During the event, IGPL and Special Olympics Bharat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting golf among athletes with intellectual disabilities. Under the partnership, IGPL will assist in organising the National Championship and work towards providing better coaching facilities through its partners, the Indian Golf Union and the Professional Golf Association of India.

Jaini said the collaboration will help special athletes gain access to professional guidance and training opportunities.

“I believe special athletes will benefit immensely because the professionals at IGPL will mentor them. They will get the opportunity to observe, learn, and play alongside them. We will also aim to have our professionals visit their training camps, interact with them, and offer as much guidance as possible," he said.

Special Olympics Bharat President Mallika Nadda said the partnership will support coach training, athlete development and the inclusion of Unified Partners, which she described as important for improving participation and performance of athletes.

“Under this MOU, IGPL will specifically assist us in organizing national championships. We will receive support for coach training, which is a crucial component; indeed, coach training and the subsequent athlete training are the two most vital aspects. Another key factor for us is the inclusion of ‘Unified Partners’; since our sport is ‘Unified’ in nature, we require such partners. I believe that if we succeed in finding good Unified Partners, our athletes will receive better training and their participation will improve," she said.

The partnership gets underway with the Special Olympics Bharat coaching camp, which starts on 1st October 2026 and runs until 10th October. Coach Anup Singh, a nationally certified coach, will be at the camp for all ten days, working with both SO Bharat coaches and athletes to strengthen their training and development, according to a release.

Beyond the camp, IGPL will continue to provide qualified, certified coaches for Special Olympics Bharat camps, and the two organisations will hold regular joint coaching camps built around athlete development, coach education and a clearer golf pathway for Special Olympics athletes. IGPL will also host a dedicated national championship for Special Olympics golfers, where IGPL professionals will join the athletes for demonstrations and playing opportunities.

At the grassroots level, the partners will roll out IGPL’s Golf On Wheels programme across Special Olympics Bharat’s network of over 1,200 schools, introducing golf to children with intellectual disabilities nationwide. (ANI)
