Japan stroll to victory over Tunisia in World Cup's 1,000th game

Ayase Ueda scored twice while Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito were also on target as the Asian giants joined the Netherlands on four points at the top of Group F.

The Blue Samurai, who held the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in their Group F opener, were always in control against Tunisia at the Monterrey Stadium.

The result marked a losing start for new Tunisia manager Herve Renard, who was hastily appointed to take over the World Cup campaign after predecessor Sabri Lamouchi was sacked in the wake of the Sweden drubbing.

But Renard's team never looked like threatening a technically superior Japanese side that were quickly into their trademark, smooth passing game.

Daichi Kamada opened the scoring after just four minutes, finishing from close range after deft interplay from Ao Tanaka and Keito Nakamura.

The Japanese almost scored again moments later, with only a desperate goalline clearance from Dylan Bronn denying the Asian giants a second goal.

Japan though finally added to their tally in the 31st minute, with striker Ueda taking advantage of some hesitant Tunisian defending to surge forward and thunder a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The rout continued in the second half, with Junya Ito latching onto a brilliant through ball to calmly finish on 69 minutes before Ueda scored again with a looping header in the 83rd minute.

Tokyo: Indian badminton star Pusarla Venkata Sindhu said Wednesday that "everybody is beatable" as she targets a medal at the world championships on home soil in New Delhi next month.

Sindhu won the world title in 2019 and also captured Olympic silver in Rio in 2016 and bronze in Tokyo five years later.

The 31-year-old is a massive star in her home country and will be the focus of attention at the world championships from August 17 to 23.

She told AFP in Tokyo, where she is playing at the Japan Open, that she expects to be in the mix for a medal.

"Right now, with the game I'm playing, I think I just need to do a little bit of small tweaks and stick to my game plan, irrespective of who the other player is," said the world number 10.

"Just keep fighting for every point. I feel that everybody is beatable."

Sindhu arrives in Tokyo after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open last month.

Her last title came in December 2024 at the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow.

She believes playing at home will help her again at the world championships.

"There will be pressure, I will not deny that, but at the same time it's a kind of confidence when you play in your home court," she said.

"I think it's really good and I feel confident having it in our country."

Sindhu is not the only Indian player in contention for a medal next month.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are number four in the men's doubles world rankings, while Lakshya Sen is number 14 in men's singles.

"In India, I think after cricket, badminton is the next big sport," said Sindhu.

"In the last few years it's become a lot more, and we have a lot of athletes who are doing really well.

"It is quite popular and I feel that there will be a lot of crowds supporting India this time."

The last time the world championships were held in India was in 2009 in Hyderabad, Sindhu's home city.

She is hoping her country makes the most of the opportunity.

"For the youngsters, it will be a good thing to see top athletes who are coming to Delhi and playing at the top level," she said.

"It's a very good experience for the youngsters to see and learn a lot more."

تأهل منتخب اسبانيا إلى الدور النهائي من بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم 2026 التي تستضيفها الولايات المتحدة وكندا والمكسيك بعد فوزه على نظيره فرنسا بنتيجة (2-0).

وفي المباراة التي أقيمت على ملعب (أيه تي أند تي) الأمريكي كانت متوازنة في شوطها الأول ودخل الطرفان بتحفظ معتمدين على الاطراف ومهارات لاعبيهم لصنع الفرص مع أفضلية لاسبانيا التي حجمت هجوم فرنسا وقلصت خطورتهم بإغلاق المساحات وحاولت فرنسا الاعتماد على التحولات الهجومية للتسجيل الا ان دفاعات اسبانيا كانت منيعة.

وفي الدقيقة 20 احتسب حكم اللقاء ركلة جزاء لاسبانيا بعد ضرب لوكاس دين للامين يامال ليسجل ميكيل اويارزابال اول اهداف اللقاء ليمنح فريقه التقدم.

وتمكنت اسبانيا من اضافه الثاني عن طريق بيدرو بيرو في الدقيقة 58 وفرضت سيطرتها في الشوط الثاني واغلقت الملعب ومنعت فرنسا من الوصول لمرماها لينجح الاسبان في العبور للنهائي.

ومن المقرر أن يلتقي منتخب اسبانيا في المباراة النهائية الفائز من مواجهه الغد التي تجمع منتخب انجلترا مع منتخب الأرجنتين.
