Canada's World Cup moment arrives at home

Toronto, Canada: "The moment is now," Canada coach Jesse Marsch declared on the evening before the country's first ever World Cup match on home soil.

He was referring to his players, but for Canadian football fans coloring downtown Toronto in red jerseys on Friday morning, the same message applied.

Growing up in the capital Ottawa, 26-year-old Dakota Boal told AFP he would "always be the only one playing soccer," with hockey and baseball far more popular among his peers. mchezo.co.za

"In the last (few) years, ever since we got into the (2022) World Cup, it feels like it's exploded," he said, before dashing into an Uber to head to the match.

It was a common theme among the supporters filtering towards the stadium ahead of kickoff against Bosnia-Herzegovina: a sport whose popularity has been growing in Canada for decades, finally set for a moment on the world stage.

Erin Clement is a teacher and football coach in Guelph, about 100 kilometres west of Toronto.

As she headed towards the stadium with her sister and a friend, she told AFP all three of her daughters play soccer, and every tournament she organizes at her school is full.

"At the youth level, it's extremely popular," she said, voicing confidence that the World Cup could jolt the sport to a new level.

"We've already felt it, just being here," she said, praising a surge of football enthusiasm permeating across the city as she walked with thousands of others towards the stadium hours before kickoff.

Henri Balcazar, who planned to watch at a fan zone near the stadium, said he was raised playing football, partly due to his Peruvian father.

He and his friends with South American backgrounds have watched as the game's popularity has grown around them, but having the World Cup at home marked a new milestone.

"I never expected it to happen in Canada," he said.

Canada is hosting 13 matches in a tournament also hosted by the United States and Mexico.

وبهذا الفوز حصد المنتخب الأسكتلندي أول ثلاث نقاط له في المجموعة الثالثة التي تضم أيضا البرازيل والمغرب ليعزز حظوظه في المنافسة على إحدى بطاقات التأهل إلى الدور التالي فيما بقي رصيد هايتي خاليا من النقاط.

Plateau de Solaison, France: Mexican Isaac Del Toro won the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes with a solo success on Sunday's eighth and final stage for the biggest victory of his career.
The 22-year-old UAE Team Emirates rider will now head to the Tour de France as a 'super-domestique' for the sport's dominant figure Tadej Pogacar, who will be chasing a record-equalling fifth Grande Boucle title.

Having already won the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico this season, Del Toro completed a third week-long stage race victory in probably the most prestigious of that category.

Del Toro, who started the day third overall, attacked with just over 9km remaining of the final of four tough climbs in Sunday's short 120km stage from Beaufort to Plateau de Solaison-Brison.

None of the other overall contenders went with him but Spain's Juan Ayuso counter-attacked 4km later and took second place on the stage.

But that was only enough to move up from fourth to third in the overall standings as Australian overnight leader Luke Tuckwell battled to limit his losses and took eighth on the stage at 1min 43sec.

That was enough to finish second overall.

وقال الاتحاد المصري في بيانه «تلقينا مخاطبة من فيفا تتعلق بعدم السماح بوضع نجوم البطولات القارية على قمصان المنتخبات خلال كأس العالم».
وأضاف «فيفا طلب أيضا إجراء تعديل على لون الأرقام على القمصان لتصبح بالأبيض بدلا من اللون الذهبي من أجل وضوح الرؤية بشكل أكبر».
وأوضح الاتحاد المصري أن الأمور ليست مفاجأة وأنه على علم بها قبل انطلاق البطولة.
وقال المصدر «فيفا أبلغنا أن النجوم المسموح بتواجدها على قمصان المنتخبات في كأس العالم تخص الفرق التي سبق تتويجها بلقب المونديال فقط، وسيقوم أي منتخب يحمل قميصه نجوما ترمز لبطولات قارية بإزالتها».
