49ers EDGE, WR picked as possible cap casualties in 2026

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to enter the new league year with roughly $42 million in cap space, which is the 10th-most in the NFL.

However, with a lot of holes to fill up-and-down their roster, San Francisco may need more, and luckily there are a few things that the team could do to create some more wiggle room for free agency and beyond.

The Athletic had their staff put together a list of one move that each team could do to save cap space this offseason, and Matt Barrows identified Bryce Huff and Demarcus Robinson as two guys who could be on the way out for salary cap reasons.

"Huff and Robinson fall into the same category: 2025 acquisitions who didn’t live up to expectations," Barrows wrote. "Huff, who’s due to earn $17 million, finished with just four sacks and none after Week 7. Robinson, meanwhile, had ample opportunities for a major role in the passing attack due to all the injuries to 49ers pass catchers but ended up with just 276 receiving yards, seventh best on the team. Both play positions of need for the 49ers, meaning that despite their underwhelming 2025 campaigns, they could be back. It’s possible the team approaches Huff about restructuring his contract."

Releasing Huff, at any time this offseason, could save the 49ers $5.39 million in cap space, per Over The Cap. Releasing Robinson before June 1 would actually cost cap space while designating a post-June 1 cut could save $253,000.

Trading Robinson would be the most beneficial for San Francisco, saving $2.25 million if it's done after June 1. If they can't find a trading partner, they might as well keep him around and see if he can contribute in his second year.
