Chivas got their most important victory so far in 2026 after defeating their main rivals Club America by a 1-0 score. Chivas continued their perfect record by winning the most important regular season matchup in the Superclasico in a match in which they were overly superior. Club America continue their scoring struggles and now have a major defeat in their lackluster start to their 2026 Clausura. America will hope to change things when they travel to face off against Puebla while Chivas will have an extremely tough match against second place Cruz Azul.

The 1st half started with both Chivas and America missing a key player because of injury: Chivas was without Luis Romo and America was without Alejandro Zendejas. A cross into the area from Richard Ledezma turned into a shot that was saved by America’s goalkeeper, Luis Malagon. A great cross into the area from Ledezma would find a wide open Armando Gonzalez, who from close range sent his shot well wide in a terrible miss. A cross into the area was volleyed wide by Gonzalez. A left footed shot from outside the area from Efrain Alvarez would go wide. A pass into the area would reach Gonzalez but he failed to control it and Malagon would get to it. After getting into the area and getting past two defenders, Ledezma got off a right footed shot that went just wide. From way outside the area, Omar Govea got off a right footed shot that went wide. Victor Davila got off a left footed shot in the area that was easily saved by Chivas’ goalkeeper, Raul Rangel. A cross into the area would fall to Davila, who got past a defender and got off a left footed shot that went right to Rangel. A left footed shot from Roberto Alvarado got deflected and forced Malagon to make a save that sent the ball wide for a corner kick. In the ensuing corner kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Diego Campillo and into the path of Armando Gonzalez, who got off a great volley shot past Malagon to score and give Chivas the 1-0 lead. It was a more than deserved goal for a Chivas side that had been the better side from the start. The halftime whistle blew as Chivas took their lead to the break.

The 2nd half started with America subbing out Victor Davila and Rodrigo Dourado for Raphael Veiga and Erick Sanchez. A great pass into the area found Gonzalez, who got past a defender and almost got past Malagon but he got of a shot that the goalkeeper made a great save on. A good cross into the area went past Malagon but Bryan Alonso Gonzalez would whiffed on his try. He would have had an open net had he connected the cross. Chivas subbed out an injured Richard Ledezma for Miguel Gomez. A longball would be reached by Gonzalez but Malagon saved the ball by getting it off his feet. America responded with an attack that would have been a good opportunity but Kevin Alvarez whiffed on his shot inside the area. Chivas subbed out Armando Gonzalez and Efrain Alvarez for Ricardo Marin and Brian Gutierrez. America subbed out Isaias Violante and Henry Martin for Alexis Gutierrez and Jose Zuñiga. A good counter attack from Chivas ended with Alvarado getting off a shot that was deflected wide. America subbed out Jonathan Dos Santos for Vinicius Lima. After a run, Zuñiga got past Campillo (who almost made a PK) but Rangel was able to block his shot almost off his feet. Chivas subbed out Diego Campillo and Omar Govea for Angel Chavez and Angel Sepulveda. After a foul, there was a scuffle between Gomez and Lima but nothing came of it. A cross into the area was badly handled by Rangel but he was get to the ball after it slipped of his arms, just before Alvarez could get to it and get off a shot. That was as close as a America could get as Chivas held on to give the fans their most important victory in what has been an incredible start to their season.

Chivas got their most valuable result of the regular season by defeating their main rivals, Club America. Chivas was the better side, especially in the first half, and got a very solid result against a team that had gone past Chivas in recent years, especially when they won their “Tricampeonato”. Chivas made it six victories out of six matches and their statement result against America has them as solid, if not the main, candidates for the Liga MX title. Still they will have a very tough test in their next match when they travel to face second place Cruz Azul. While Cruz Azul are currently without a home stadium, and are playing their matches in Puebla, the away match should be the toughest test they have faced, including the Superclasico. Still Chivas has been playing great and the huge boost of the win against America will definitely help them. On the other hand, Club America is in crisis mode after a mediocre start to their tournament has now been made worse by losing their biggest match. They will have a huge opportunity to improve when they face off against Puebla but right now, they aren’t having a good time.
