Robert Edwards is joining Georgia football's support staff, his brother Terrence Edwards confirmed to the Athens Banner-Herald on Monday night.
DawgsHQ first reported the news.
Edwards was a running back for the Bulldogs from 1993-97, originally recruited to play cornerback but converted to the offensive side of the ball for his junior season. In 1994, the only stat he had was 4 interceptions. Between 1995-97, he recorded 394 touches for 2,334 yards and 27 touchdowns, as well as 48 receptions for 455 yards and 3 touchdowns.
He was drafted by the New England Patriots No. 18 overall in 1998, playing for one season before injuring his knee at an NFL rookie flag football game during Pro Bowl week in Hawaii. He took a break from the gridiron until 2002, when he returned with the Miami Dolphins for one season.
He combined for 311 touches for 1,222 yards and 10 touchdowns, as well as 53 receptions for 457 yards and 4 touchdowns in those two seasons in the NFL. He also earned the George Halas Award in 2003, given to an NFL player, coach or staffer who has overcome the most adversity to succeed.
After the NFL, he played three seasons in the Canadian Football League, two with the Montreal Alouettes and one with the Toronto Argonauts.
Edwards has spent the past 17 years coaching high school football.
When his playing career ended, he started coaching at Arlington Christian School in Fairburn, Ga., in 2009. He has also coached at Greene County High School, Riverwood High School, and, most recently, Washington High School, where he starred as a two-way player in the early 1990s.
