International ski federation dismisses Finnish Olympic cross-country wax-room protest

Time is not on Finland’s side at the Olympics.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has rejected a Finnish protest over Olympic cross-country equipment concerns because it wasn’t submitted on time.

In a statement sent to Sportsnet on Monday, FIS said “a protest against another competitor or competitor’s equipment can be submitted no later than 15 minutes after the publication of the unofficial results. Since the race took place on Tuesday (Feb. 10), FIS deems that the ‘protest’ submitted by team Finland on Saturday (Feb. 14) was no longer receivable.

“Additionally, the timeframe for the submission of any appeal against a jury decision ─ no later than 48 hours after the publication of the official results ─ has also expired.”

The statement did not address the issues raised by Finland in its complaint about the men’s cross-country sprint.

Per Inside The Games, Finland felt a waxing device used by Norway was not on a list of tools permitted before the event. Norway reportedly got permission to use it later, but other teams claim they were unaware of the new guidelines. Finland’s complaint also noted the U.S. had a bottle of liquid in the waxing area that was not considered permissible.

Norway’s Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won the race and has since set a Winter Olympics career record with a ninth gold medal.

American Ben Ogden captured silver in the sprint, while Norway’s Oskar Opstad Vike took bronze.

Finland’s Lauri Vuorinen was fourth.
