'Lover of football' Thomason enjoying Wrexham role

When joining Wrexham on a three-year deal last July, George Thomason would not have been expecting to play as a wing-back.

The 25-year-old had been used almost exclusively as a central midfielder during his five years with Bolton Wanderers in League One.

But the Blackpool academy product has taken to life wide on the left for Wrexham as easily as he adjusted to playing in the Championship for the first time.

"I came to the club as a midfielder in the summer but I feel I'm someone who is a lover of football, that's why I take on so much information and want to be adaptable," Thomason told BBC Sport Wales.

"I think it's really important to be adaptable in the modern game because if you can cover multiple roles you give yourself the best chance of playing."

Injuries to Liberato Cacace and the departure of James McClean opened the door for Thomason's switch to left wing-back, having started his time at Wrexham in midfield.

And while Thomason says his approach to the position is "unorthodox", it is a role he is relishing.

"I've really enjoyed playing out there," added Thomason.

"I've built strong relationships in the wide areas with the players around me.

"The way I play at wing-back might be a little bit unorthodox or less traditional but I try to make it my own and bring my own qualities and play to my strengths."

Now heading into the business end of the season, Thomason is hoping to play a key role in Wrexham's bid for a historic fourth-straight promotion.

Phil Parkinson's side travel to Bristol City on Tuesday night (19:45 GMT), with both sides able to climb into the Championship's play-off places with victory.

Thomason started the reverse fixture - a 2-0 win at the Stok Cae Ras - in midfield, and hopes to add to his goal contributions to help Wrexham complete the double over the Robins in his new-found role.

"I feel as though I've added to the group and done well," said Thomason.

"I'd like to contribute more to at the top end of the pitch and that's something I always want to add to my game - whether that is goals or assists.

"But in general I'm really happy with how my first six or seven months have gone and I'm continuing to grow and get familiar with this division."

Parkinson says Thomason's "tactical understanding" made him the perfect player to make the seamless switch to wing-back.

"We looked at George in training for a while before we made the change, he was excellent there," said the Wrexham manager.

"He has so much tactical understanding of the game and he's been brilliant.

"He's a very good player to have on the pitch in terms of his leadership qualities, for someone who is relatively young and inexperienced at our club.

"I think he is showing each week what a good player he is."
