Volantis twirls gem in season debut, Texas sweeps UC Davis

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After taking the country by storm as a relief pitcher last season, Texas sophomore lefthander Dylan Volantis showed what he could as a starter Sunday.

Volantis mowed through the UC Davis lineup, allowing one hit with eight strikeouts in seven innings in a 9-1 Texas win to sweep the Aggies on UFCU Disch-Falk Field. An unearned run crossed the plate in the sixth inning, and he needed just 78 pitches to get through his outing before Michael Winter worked the final two frames.

The Longhorns scored six runs in the third inning, five coming with two outs. Adrian Rodriguez smacked a bases-clearing double to provide the big blow. Aiden Robbins and Casey Borba each hit RBI singles, and Ashton Larson plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the frame.

Texas hit .385 with two outs, but could have done better with runners in scoring position, hitting at a .294 clip. Texas left 13 runners on base.

Ethan Mendoza and Anthony Pack Jr. each had two hits for the Longhorns. Pack, a freshman, is starting his college career off with a flourish, hitting .545 (6-for-11) in his first collegiate series.

After a 12-2 win in the opener, the Longhorns won the second game of the series Saturday 6-4. Mendoza had three hits, including a 2-run home run to dead center field in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Longhorns (3-0) continue their homestand at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Lamar. The Cardinals won their season-opening series against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 2-1, but lost Sunday’s finale 3-2 in 10 innings.
